Expanding fast charging without a grid upgrade: Stadtwerke Würzburg adds ADS-TEC Energy ChargePost to existing charging site

  • Battery-buffered ChargePost delivers up to 280 kW of charging power with just 50 kW of available grid capacity
  • Two additional fast-charging points without upgrading the existing transformer
  • Approach can be replicated at other charging sites with limited grid capacity

Nürtingen/Würzburg, 15. October 2026 – German municipal utility Stadtwerke Würzburg has commissioned an ADS-TEC Energy ChargePost at its charging site at Sonnleite 5 in Kist, located on the premises of the Seniorenresidenz Kist care home. The ChargePost complements an existing fast charger, adding two publicly accessible fast-charging points.

The project addresses a common challenge when expanding existing charging infrastructure: the site's transformer could not provide sufficient additional capacity for another conventional fast charger. Upgrading the electrical infrastructure would have required further investment, extensive construction work, and additional time for planning and implementation.

Instead, the maximum power output of the existing fast charger was reduced from 300 kW to 250 kW, freeing up 50 kW of grid capacity for the new ChargePost. Its integrated 201 kWh battery stores energy from the grid and delivers it at significantly higher power when vehicles are charging. This enables the ChargePost to provide up to 280 kW of charging power despite having just 50 kW of grid capacity available.

As a result, the site now offers four fast-charging points instead of two, with total installed charging capacity increasing from 300 kW to 530 kW. This expansion was achieved without increasing the site's grid connection capacity or upgrading the existing transformer.

The same principle can be applied to other existing fast-charging sites with limited grid capacity. Rather than upgrading the grid connection before adding further charging points, a ChargePost can store energy using the available grid capacity and deliver it at higher power when required.

“We want to explore new approaches and test innovative technologies as we expand our charging infrastructure. The battery-buffered charger in Kist demonstrates how we can expand existing sites despite limited grid capacity, while gaining valuable experience for future projects,” says Bernd Hammer, Head of Telecommunications and Traffic Engineering at WVV Energie.
